SRADeV Nigeria as a member of the GAIA/BFFP group in Nigeria is executing a 7-month project on targeted advocacy on the national policy on plastics management and the transposition of the Basel Convention Amendment in Nigeria aimed at facilitating national advocacy on the domestication and transposition of the Basel Convention on the plastic waste amendment to national law toward the ban of single-use plastics. Specifically, the objectives will be to:
- To advocate the urgent adoption of the ‘national policy on plastics management’ upon which the Basel Convention amendment on plastics is based in Nigeria.
- To raise stakeholder’s awareness on the transposition of the Basel Convention plastic waste amendments in national law.
- To facilitate a national campaign and roadmap towards the bans on single-use plastic in Nigeria.
Activities being undertaken for the successful execution of this project includes a technical review of the current national policy on plastic waste management in Nigeria the review of the draft National Policy on plastic waste management in Nigeria and the proposed action plans in a view of producing a gap analysis in conformance with the Basel Convention Amendment on plastic waste was done by two foremost technical experts in chemical and plastics issues around the world Professor Babajide Alo and Professor Nancy Onianwa. The Gaps identified by the experts in the technical report formed the basis of the call for a civil society round table discussion on the policy document and technical report, to formulate strategies for advancing the Basel Convention amendment.
The discussion forum held on January 29, 2021, with civil society organizations who are also members of GAIA and IPEN in attendance physically and mostly virtually to ensure strict adherence to covid-19 restrictions. Participants from the different NGOs such as Pan African Vision for the Environment, Nature Care Resource Center, Green Knowledge Foundation, Center for EarthWorks, Nigerian Environmental Society, etc… gave their comments in line with the above objectives, towards formulating an advocacy strategy/ action plan for domesticating and advancing the Basel convention amendment on plastic waste into National laws in Nigeria. SRADeV Nigeria will be Conducting a webinar conference for relevant authorities and agencies, a media conference to advocate for the domestication of the amendment, and other means of media engagement through press releases and media appearances to conclude the project.
To strengthen this advocacy, a policy brief that adopted the gaps and made recommendations for the transposition and domestication of the BC amendment was released on the 8th of December, 2021.
