Sequel to the completion of the NGO Preparatory Support for Minamata COP4 last year by SRADeV Nigeria, we are currently implementing the Clean Lighting Coalition (CLiC) Market Transformation Pilot project aimed at supporting market transformation by showing that the transition to LED is possible, dispel myths about LED demand, use, supply, and disposal, then accelerate markets for LEDs.

The NGO Preparatory support project was successfully completed through a series of tasks including but not limited to market checks and surveys, policy research, stakeholder interviews,  national import data sourcing, and lighting supply chain research to produce a national lighting report that contained detailed information and links to/copies of any environmental or energy-efficiency policy measures related to fluorescent lighting in Nigeria, detailed information about the lighting supply chain in the country and a country stand towards participating and supporting the African Lighting Amendment in Minamata COP 4.2

To move forward in the process of ending toxic lighting and transitioning to clean lighting, the CLiC team through clasp appliances is sponsoring a building led retrofit project under the market transformation pilot initiative to convert existing lighting fixtures in a building (whether they be CFL, Fluorescent, Incandescent, etc) to an LED lighting fixture. This process has inherent benefits to achieving 50% lower lighting electricity bills with payback periods of less than one year, minimizing re-lamping and reducing maintenance costs, and transitioning to environmentally safe and healthy lighting.

The 6-month project being implemented by SRADeV Nigeria so far has achieved signing a partnership with the Folarin Coker (Lagos State Civil Servant) Clinic identified for the retrofit. The staff clinic was chosen as it meets the criteria for a good success story and potential of saving thousands of humans who are exposed to mercury laden compact fluorescent lamps being used at the facility presently.

Other means being employed by the CLiC to advocate for the transition to clean lighting are digital campaigns such as #EndToxicLighting and #CleanLightingProtects Campaigns, Twitter Space Event on International Women’s Day 2022 and other on-going discussions on all social media platforms.
